The three things that should govern what we eat are: food should nourish, it should help to safeguard our health from diseases by playing a role in fighting ailments and lastly it should look and taste good. A healthy balanced diet should include servings of carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, milk or yogurt, protein and some fats and oils.
Eat regular meals and cut down on sugary, sweetened soft drinks, cakes, confectioneries and chocolate. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruits are considered to be the ideal snacks in the evening. Reduce the intake of saturated fats and limit salty foods.
Cucumber salad, sprouts mixed with vegetables, spring salads, and corn salads are always a must for people over 45 year of age. These salads provide sufficient roughage in the diet.
Protein can be eaten in the form of cooked pulses, sprouts, cottage cheese and mushrooms and non vegetarians can include egg, chicken and fish in their diet.
It’s always best to take fresh fruit juices in the morning. Papaya as a fruit is especially good and can be taken alternatively with apple and guava.
One should always opt for fresh food with emphasis on milk and milk products as it contains vitamins. Boiled vegetables can be taken with a dash of salt and pepper.
In addition to these, exercise should be done regularly for 20-30 minutes at least 3 times a week.
And don’t forget to drink plenty of water – at least 8 glasses a day. It’s actually recommended to drink half your body weight in ounces of water. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, then drink 100 ounces of water a day.
Healthy dieting can keep you fit and free from disease and will help you look and feel totally fit.
